First, let me wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays. If you are reading this on Christmas Day, I genuinely hope your plans today include much more than just reading blogs.
Anyway, holidays are always tough on blog traffic but the toughest stretch is the time between Christmas and New Year’s Day. In other words, today marks the beginning of a rough week in terms of traffic. Many people are spending time with their families and they should. You should too! Personally, I’ll be spending the next several days with my family as well and even though I may be replying to a few comments once they all go to bed, I won’t be spending any significant time writing or promoting (this post was written earlier in the week).
The reality is, unlike Thanksgiving or Independence Day, global holidays like Christmas and New Year’s Day are so universal that any decline in traffic will be relative. That means nearly every blog around the world will suffer so you’re not really losing that much traction. That said, although Alexa rankings and such won’t usually dip much if at all, less traffic usually means less income.
My parting message to you is this: Forget about what you received this holiday. Rather, think about how much you gave all year and how much you’re going to give next year. Think about who helped you get your blog to where it is today and how you’re going to return the gesture. Think about who you’re going to mentor, which site you should visit more often, and who you should thank for their contributions.
